Important Update: School Communications Have Moved to Hero

As you know, last term we transitioned from Etap to Hero, and we are pleased to be embracing the many wonderful features Hero offers to keep our school community connected and informed.

Moving forward, all school communications will be shared exclusively through Hero via the Community Feed. Notices and updates will be targeted to the appropriate groups, ensuring families receive information relevant to them. This includes general school notices, whole-school updates and sports team communications, all accessible through the Community Feed. We also ask that all families now use the Hero app to report student absences.

For the time being, SeeSaw will continue to be used across our classrooms, so we ask families to please keep the SeeSaw app on their devices.

Community events and celebrations will also be shared on our school Facebook page, so we encourage families to follow our page to keep up to date with what’s happening in the school and wider community.

In the coming days, we will also be enabling access for families to view their term accounts through Hero, making it even easier to stay connected and keep track of important school information.

We encourage all families to check the Hero app regularly to ensure you stay up to date with important information and everything happening across our school.

School Uniform Reminder

A gentle reminder about our school uniform.

We apologise in advance if this message feels a little firm, but during school photos yesterday, it became very apparent just how many of our students are not currently wearing the correct school uniform.

When enrolling at Reignier Catholic School, both students and parents agree to uphold our school expectations, including wearing the correct school uniform. We really appreciate your support in helping us maintain these standards.

Please take a moment to check the following uniform requirements with your child.

Shoes and Sandals: Please ensure your child is wearing one of the approved styles of shoes or sandals shown in the images below. Please note that the labels “summer shoes” and “winter shoes” shown in the images are for reference only. Students may wear any of the approved shoe or sandal options throughout the year, regardless of the season. We are currently seeing a number of non-regulation styles and colours being worn, including sneakers. Shoes and sandals must be black only, and shoes must be leather and polishable.

Girls’ Socks: Girls are required to wear navy socks, worn up to the knee and not over the knee.

Boys’ Socks: Boys are required to wear grey wool socks, worn up to the knee, with the required turn-down.

Jewellery: One plain gold or silver stud or sleeper may be worn in each ear. A wristwatch may also be worn. If your child is wearing a smartwatch, it must be disabled from sending or receiving text messages and/or phone calls during the school day. Students are permitted to wear a taonga or religious necklace, provided it is small, of a suitable length, does not cause a health and safety risk, and is worn under the school uniform so that it is not visible. Medical alert bracelets are also permitted to be worn. No other jewellery, including bracelets and rings, is permitted.

Nail Polish: Nail polish is not to be worn at school.

Hair: Hair that is shoulder length or longer needs to be tied back using school-coloured hair ties or bands, such as navy, white or black. Half-up, half-down hairstyles are not considered an acceptable school hairstyle.

We take great pride in our school uniform and the way our students present themselves. We want our students to feel proud of being part of Reignier Catholic School and to wear their uniform with that same sense of pride.

We ask that all students return in Term 4 wearing the correct school uniform.

Tomorrow, the 2026 Ōtātara Kapa Haka Festival will be held at Pettigrew Green Arena, with seven local schools coming together to celebrate the richness and strength of kapa haka. We are proud to be the host school for this special event.

Tickets have now been made available to all of our school whānau, and we would love to welcome you along to support our amazing Kapa Haka Performance Group as they take the stage tomorrow.

We would love to see you there, cheering our tauira on, celebrating their hard work and dedication and supporting them as they take the stage alongside other local schools.

There will be no t-ball teams or Yr 1/2 netball team this time.

If you have registered your child for a sport, please consider if you can coach/oversee a team as without this help, teams will not be able to take part in the competitions.

Years 3 – 6 Interschool Cross Country Tomorrow – Reminder

Years 3 – 6 Interschool Cross Country Tomorrow – Reminder

Please remember that the Interschool Cross Country takes place tomorrow! All participating children, as well as parents who have kindly offered to help with transport, need to meet at the school hall no later than 8:45 AM, as we will be departing promptly at 9:00 AM.

Students should arrive wearing their school PE uniform and sneakers. Because parts of the course involve crossing concrete paths, wearing footwear is strongly encouraged for safety, though it remains optional.

Please make sure your child brings a full water bottle and plenty of food in their lunchbox to keep their energy up throughout the event. While a food stall will be operating on site during the day, please remind your child that they are entirely responsible for looking after any money they bring.

Introducing Hero – Our New Student Management System

We’re excited to introduce Hero, our new Student Management System (SMS) and a new way for our school, staff and whānau to stay connected.

Hero is a secure online platform that brings together learning, reporting, communication and school administration — all in one place and accessible from any device.

Through Hero, you’ll be able to follow your child’s learning journey by viewing, reacting to and commenting on posts and progress updates shared by their teacher. You’ll also receive relevant school notices and events through the Community Feed, and reports will be shared through Hero as they become available.

Getting started with Hero
To get started, please download the Hero app on your device and follow the login steps provided. The Hero app is available for both Apple (iOS) and Android devices, so you can access Hero whether you use an iPhone, iPad or Android phone or tablet.

The screenshots below show how to download the app and log in to Hero.

It is important that parents and caregivers use the email address that has been provided to the school when logging into Hero. Your Hero account is linked to the email address we have on your child’s school records.

If you are unsure which email address is linked to your child, or if your details need to be updated, please contact Mrs Gouder or Mrs Shanks so we can check and update our records.

School reports and term accounts will be made available to families through Hero this term. As we continue to introduce Hero’s features, you will see more information and functionality become available.

What’s coming next
We’ll be introducing additional Hero features gradually.

From next term, parents and caregivers will be able to use Hero to submit student absences and receive school communications through the platform.

Our longer-term goal is for Hero to become the main place for school information and communication. From the start of 2027, Hero will replace Seesaw and the School App, making it easier for whānau to find learning updates, school notices, reports, absences and other important communications all in one place.

We’re taking it one step at a time
As with any new system, there’s a lot for us to learn and navigate. We’ll be introducing features gradually as we become familiar with Hero and ensure everything is working well for our school community.

You may notice some features becoming available before others, and things may look or work a little differently as we settle into the new system. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this transition.

Our goal is to make Hero a simple, secure and valuable way for you to engage with your child’s learning and school experience, while making it easier to find all of your school communications in one place.

We’ve recently had a number of Reignier School Library books returned to the Taradale and Napier public libraries.

Could we please ask families to have a quick check at home and make sure any Reignier School Library books are returned to school, rather than to the public library.

If a Reignier book has already been returned to a public library, it may need to be collected and returned to school, so we would really appreciate your help in checking before returning any books.

Our Whānau Mass for this term is this Sunday 6th September 9am at St Mary’s Church in Osier Rd. As part of your commitment to the special character of our school, attendance is expected. Students are to come in their school uniform and sit with their families (unless they are carrying out a ministry). We encourage whānau to bring something for the foodbank baskets – non perishable items. Team Rea families (Yr 4-6) please bring some food towards our morning tea that will follow Mass.  Please take the food to the Parish Centre before Mass. Please arrive by 8.45am.

School Cross Country – tomorrow

Our school cross country is tomorrow

Children will need the following:

Clothing in house colours (students may come to school in these clothes/no uniform required)
Named water bottle
Hat and sunblock
Asthma inhalers
Sports shoes
A warm layer

We warmly invite spectators to the event. Exact races times are unable to be given, but the order of the races is as follows (please note this is different to what was originally communicated):

Year 3/4 championship
Pompallier Yr 3-8 non competitive

The first race will begin at 11.25am.

The championship course will be run on the field and the adjoining streets and the children will be seated on tarpaulins in their house groups. Behind the tarpaulins we will have seating for the spectators. You are welcome to bring your own chairs too. We ask for you to please be vigilant; if arriving/leaving while children are racing refrain from crossing the course. We ask that spectators encourage their child’s participation. All children have been training and are capable of taking part.

Collaborative Art resources

Next week, our students will be celebrating Social Justice Week with a focus on this year’s theme, ‘Belonging.”

To mark the week, we are creating a collaborative art piece that visually explores what it means to belong to a community. We would love your help collecting materials! If you have any spare wool or ribbon scraps (any colours, lengths, or textures) lying around at home, please send them in with your child over the next couple of days to Room 5.

Parking on Moeller Street

Over the last week, we have received numerous complaints regarding our parents parking and blocking our neighbour’s driveways on Moeller Street.

At all times, our neighbours need to be able to access their properties. This is unacceptable driving behaviour from our school community. 

Our neighbours have been told, that if there are car blocking their driveway, to record the license plate and contact the police straight away.

This is an ongoing issue, and even with reminders in the newsletters and various messages sent out via this platform, people are still continuing to be ignorant of our neighbours. This is not living out our value of Community.

Please be more vigilant when dropping off or picking up your child from Moeller Street.

Passing of Trish Gouder

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we share the passing of Trish Gouder, a former teacher of Reignier.

Trish passed away peacefully on Friday afternoon, surrounded by her loving family.

She was a valued member of our school community, and we extend our deepest sympathy and love to her family and friends at this very sad time.

“Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon Trish. May she rest in peace. Amen.”

Trish’s funeral service will be held on Wednesday 19th August at 1pm at St. Mary’s Church.

May she rest peacefully.

Tomorrow afternoon at 2.15pm in the hall, we will be holding a dress rehearsal for our amazing students who have been preparing for the regional DanceNZMade competition this coming Sunday and Monday.

We would love to extend the invitation to our entire school community to come along, be part of the audience and help us celebrate our 45 dancers and the incredible mahi they have put in over the past five weeks.

This is a wonderful opportunity to show our dancers how proud we are of their commitment, teamwork and perseverance. Your support and encouragement will mean so much to them as they prepare to take the stage this weekend.

We would love to see as many of our whānau and school community there as possible to cheer them on!

Water Safety Session Thursday 20th August

Kia ora whānau of Yr 3, 5 and 7 students

There are two final sessions left for Water Safety – next Tuesday and Thursday.

Whānau are welcome to watch the final session on Thursday 20th August. Sessions are held at Dolphin Academy which can be accessed from Ngarimu Cresent. Please do not go through Taradale Primary.

Session times are as follows:
Yr 7 11-11.30am
Yr 3 11.30-12 noon
Yr 5 12 noon – 12.30pm

DanceNZMade – Change in evening pick up time Monday 17th August

Due to a change in schedule, the performance on Monday will conclude earlier. This means students will now need to be collected from the foyer of the Toitoi, Hastings at 6.30pm.

Gala Day Helper Forms – Deadline Extended

So far, only 20 families have returned their forms, so we’ve extended the deadline. If you haven’t returned your Gala Day Helper Form yet, could you please get it to the school office by this Wednesday, 12 August?

We really need your help to make Gala Day a success, every bit of support makes a big difference.

Year 7/8 DanceNZMade practice after school today

Due to a number of our students being away today, we would like to finish practise at 4.30pm. If you can collect your child up then, that would be great. If not, they will still be supervised till 5pm.

Spooner Shield

Kia ora whānau,

The draw is attached for those intending on coming along to Spooner Shield tomorrow. You might wish to bring along a chair to sit on. Food is on sale and there will be a coffee cart on site at Bledisloe School.

Please ensure all children taking part are at school at 7.45am, with everything they require as per notices sent home and shared on Seesaw.

It is going to be a great day.

Kia ora whānau,

Below are some key updates for our students involved with DanceNZMade. Please make sure they are in your diaries.

Friday 7th Aug: NO dance practice after school for the Yr 5/6 Troupe due to being at Spooner Shield all day.

Sunday 9th Aug: Practice for Yr 7/8 Troupe 4.30 – 6pm in the hall. It is important for all dancers to be there.

Wednesday12th August: All dancers to bring their make up and costumes to school for checking. (Students are encourage to bring their shoes and other parts of their costume before Wednesday to practice dancing in them)

Friday 14th August: Dress rehearsal day. It would help if students could please come to school with their hair done and if have time their foundation on (don’t stress if you run out of time)

Sunday 16th August: Those students dancing solos, duo or trio to meet Mrs Shanks at 1pm at Iona College, Havelock North (they will be dancing in the Blyth Performing Arts Centre). Arrive with hair and make up done.

Monday 17th August: All students to arrive at school by 7.50am and meet in Room 8. Refer to the previous notice sent home that details everything they need to bring. Remember students are to be picked up from the Toitoi, Hastings 7pm.

Each family has received a form outlining how they can help on Gala Day. Could these please be returned to the school office no later than tomorrow (Friday 7 August).

We need as much help as we can get in the lead-up to, and on, Gala Day, and we really appreciate your support.

Please also note the donation items we will be accepting for our various stalls and when these can begin being brought into school.

Celebrating Our Tamariki Beyond the School Gates

At Reignier Catholic School, we love celebrating the achievements, passions, and unique talents of our tamariki—both inside and outside the classroom! Whether it’s hitting a milestone in sports, performing on stage, or earning a badge in scouts, we want to cheer them on as a community.

We invite our whānau to email class teachers photos of your children in action, along with a brief description of their event or accomplishment. These will be shared with our school community.
