Whānau Mass 19th March
Fri Mar 17 10:31amMorena,
Over the last couple of days, we have been asked by parents if they need to attend the Whānau Mass this weekend, and the simple answer is yes.
Parents, you are your child/ren’s first faith teacher and role-model of faith. When you enrolled your child/ren you choose to support, uphold and promote the Catholic Character of this kura. This means supporting our liturgies, masses and other special character event that we hold throughout the year. Just like you would school trips, house swimming, athletics, discos, report evenings, camps etc.
As a school, we ask for you to join us one Sunday, three times a year and then for our final end of year mass. This is where we are able to come together as one family in one faith and in communion. We are aware life is busy, but celebrating our faith through mass is part of who were are. If you have family/friends staying with you, bring them along.
We look forward to seeing you this coming Sunday, to share and celebrate Mass with our tamariki as they lead many of the ministries along with our presiding priest Fr Chris. Then to join us afterwards at morning tea hosted by Friends of Reignier.

Strike Exemption
Sat Mar 11 10:20amMorena whanau,
We have been granted an exemption from striking this coming Thursday 16th March.
This means that school will be a normal school day for our students and house swimming will go ahead as planned.
Though our staff are not striking, we wish to acknowledge those who are. We ask that you please extend your support teachers across the country. This Thursday will see teachers coming together from ECE, primary, secondary and area schools wanting better conditions and support for their students, ensuring the needs of our learners now and for the future.
Thank you for your understanding.

Fri Mar 10 09:56am
We look forward to seeing you all next week.
Proposed Strike Action Next Week
Fri Mar 10 09:23amKia ora whānau,
Last night, you will have been made aware that teachers across the motu voted to take industrial action on 16 March. This decision was not taken lightly.
Tamariki need a quality education. And as teachers we want to give that to them. Unfortunately, the funding for our schools is not enough for us to give us the time we would like to support all our kids to thrive.
Principals and teachers in primary and area schools have considered at length offers from the government to settle our respective collective agreements. The offers did not meet our expectations, nor make sufficient steps towards the changes we need for our children to succeed.
Teachers feel that this was the only way the government would listen and recognise that when they support our children to learn and succeed, we are supporting whānau and communities to thrive.
However, due to the recent weather event ‘Cyclone Gabrielle’, our kura has applied for an exemption to not strike next week. We feel at the moment for our school community being together and for our tamariki not to have another disruption, needs to be our top priority. We do not know if this exemption will be granted and when we will hear. Once we know, this will be communicated.
We ask that you do join us in supporting our fellow teachers and principals who are striking on behalf of us.
We look forward to another great year in 2023 – and together with your support, building the case for better investment in our tamariki.

House Swimming Years 3-6 Thursday 16th March
Tue Mar 07 01:15pmThank you to everyone for returning notices and the offers of parental help. Originally we were only having length races to reduce the amount of time away from school, in light of Cyclone Gabrielle. Based on reluctance from some students, to participate, we are now going to include width events across the year groups (freestyle and backstroke).
Mrs Jackson has spoken with children today. Please check in with your child as to what they have decided to do – some have opted to change from lengths to widths and others who originally did not wish to participate will now be involved.
The pool is 1.2m deep, 25m long and approx 18m wide (which is longer than a length of our school pool). If you have any concerns please contact your child’s teacher.
All children in Year 3-6 are to come in house colours but the children not participating in House Swimming will remain at school next Thursday 16th March.

Friday 24th February
Thu Feb 23 05:54pmEvening whānau,
It has been great to be able to catch up with whānau over the last couple of days. A special thanks to all those in our community who are out and about supporting one another, have made donations, have checked in on our staff to see how they are doing, for the hugs and aroha towards one another. It is a reminder of the strength of our special character being lived out in our immediate and wider community.
Most of you will be aware we have been put on an orange rain warning. This may cause some to feel worried and anxious over what this may mean for the next couple of days, and that is completely understandable. If you want to keep your loved ones at home tomorrow, we ask that you please follow the usual procedure for absences by either ringing the school office in the morning, or using the school app.
Tomorrow, we will continue with our alternative hours 10-2.30pm. We are looking to move back to normal hours next week and I will be able to confirm this with you tomorrow.
Enjoy the rest of your evening.
Ngā mihi nui,
Teresa Shanks
School Opening
Tue Feb 21 04:27pmKia ora whanau,
I am delighted to inform you that we will be re-opening school from tomorrow, Wednesday 22nd February. After meeting with our surrounding Taradale School Principals, we will be running alternative opening hours for the rest of the week and this will be reviewed on Friday.
This means school will run from 10am – 2.30pm. Students are able to be on site from 9.30am.
You may be aware of the traffic congestion that is currently happening on Guppy Road at either end of the work day. We do not want our families to be caught in this which is why a later start time has been chosen. Our end of day has been staggered to help reduce congestion with our immediate surrounding schools Greenmeadows and Arthur Miller.
If your child attends before school and after care, please contact them as we are aware some of them are up and running from tomorrow.
Sadly, not all our Taradale Schools are in a postion to open just yet. We are thinking of them and their school communities. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to them.
I know for some of you, school reopeing is great news and your child/ren are ready to return to school. For others this may not be the case. This is absolutely fine. We do not want to place any pressure on whanau if the time is not right. We are here when you are ready.
Please be reassured that we have got your child’s wellbeing at the forefront over the coming days and weeks. We understand the emotional impact that they storm has had. We are here to support you and your whanau in any way we can. Please do not hesitate to contact myself.
God Bless

School Closure tomorrow
Mon Feb 13 12:01pmKia ora te whānau,
We have been monitoring the situation all morning, following the updated weather forecasts, and communicating with the other primary schools in our Kāhui and local area. Given the potential for significant disruption and unsafe conditions as a result of conditions caused by Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle in the next 24-36 hours, we have made the decision to close the school for Tuesday, 14 February. Students are not to be on site. Teachers will also not be on site.
We are aware it is an unpredictable situation, but we are acting out of an abundance of caution and would rather make an over-cautious decision than have students, staff and parents in unsafe conditions. We also felt it important to give you as much notice as possible.
As this stage due to being a one day closure, we are not asking teachers to be available online tomorrow due to the uncertainty of what services [power, internet] may be up and running. Kākāpō team has their class drive should you wish your child to be engaged with some learning activities.
Hawkes Bay Civil Defence Emergency Management Group are advising residents to get whānau and households ready. Prepare for the possibility of power cuts and road closures. Have a grab bag in case you need to evacuate and have supplies for at least three days.
All communication will continue to be sent out via the school app and our media communication channels. A decision about Wednesday will be made Tuesday afternoon once we have a better indication of the developing situation.
If you wish to pick your child/ren up earlier today, you are more than welcome. Please just let the office know so we can have your child waiting for you.
God Bless.

Cyclone Gabrielle
Sun Feb 12 03:29pmKia ora e te whanau,
You will be seeing lots of communication on social media and from the Met Service and Civil Defence keeping us up to date with the movement of Cyclone Gabrielle. We are monitoring the situation closely. At this point in time, we are unsure of the full potential impact that this weather event will have on us, but we will continue to monitor and update you if there are any significant changes.
In the meantime, school is open as normal tomorrow. If anything changes, notifications will be sent out via the school app.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow morning. Gathering Liturgy will be 9am in the hall, hope you are able to join us.
God Bless
